In the detection process of high-speed rail flaw by ultrasonic flaw, there are some abnormal echoes in rail head near the bolt holes in B scan sometimes, however, they are not echoes from defects but ghost echoes actually. They are so similar to transverse defects in rail head that they can be easily misidentified as serious defects. According to the principle of ghost echoes, the propagation paths of ghost echoes was analyzed based on the B scan data of 60 kg/m rail detected by rail flaw detection vehicle. Ghost echoes from bolt holes were finally verified by the comparison of the calculated result with actual data and the simulation with CIVA software. Furthermore, the characteristics of ghost echos were summarized in this paper, which can provide theoretical support for the recognition of ghost echoes from bolt holes, improve detection rate and reduce false alarming rate.
